Tech & Innovation

A supercharged dishwasher using heated steam could kill bacteria in 25 seconds

The researchers believe that more dishes could be washed at once with a higher number of nozzles in the dishwasher that uses superheated steam. Although the time required to get rid of the heat-resistant bacteria would be relatively higher, it surely wouldn't take as long as conventional dishwashers.

New contra-rotating turbine design produces double the energy of the world's largest turbine

The company behind it hopes to have a massive 30-MW model by 2029.

Scientists Find a Simple Way to Produce Hydrogen From Water at Room Temperature

In the new research, scientists describe a relatively simple method involving aluminum nanoparticles that are able to strip the oxygen from water molecules and leave hydrogen gas.

Corporate & Deals

€9.6tn investor coalition launched to tackle global water crisis

Several European firms, including Fidelity and DWS, have pledged to engage with 72 companies on water usage and pollution.

Capital raise puts Envirosuite digital water on map

Digital environmental services company Envirosuite has said its nascent water business has gone “from seed to global”, after a capital injection last year boosted new contracts around the world.

Water & the Environment

“Fighting for Inches” in the Southeast’s Struggle With Salt

Chalmers first began to worry seriously about salt when Hurricane Matthew struck the southeastern U.S. in September 2016. “That kind of devastated most of the fields because we got that storm surge,” he recounted. “It came right over the roads and embankment, and all of these fields were probably under, say, three, four feet of salt water.”

The Pakistan Flood Crisis Is a Heartbreaking Tragedy Awash With Uncomfortable Truths

Relentless rains in Pakistan over two months have caused the country's worst flooding in more than a decade. Floodwaters have washed away roads, buildings, and crops.

A Foot of Sea Level Rise From Greenland's Melting Ice May Already Be Locked in

If the worst year in the past two decades were to become representative of Greenland's water cycle, the commitment of ice loss could cause sea levels to creep up by around 78.2 centimeters (over 2.5 ft).

Heatwave in China is the most severe ever recorded in the world

People in large parts of China have been experiencing two months of extreme heat. Hundreds of places have reported temperatures of more than 40°C (104°F), and many records have been broken. Subway stations have set up rest areas where people can recover from the heat.

PFAS & Chemicals

EPA finally moves to label some ‘forever chemicals’ as hazardous

The long-awaited move will help clean up two of these omnipresent and dangerous substances. But it leaves many others unaddressed.

Arizona researchers developing sponges to soak up PFAS

Researchers from the University of Arizona and Northern Arizona University are developing specialized, reusable sponges to remove per- and polyfluoroalkyl substances (PFAS) from water.

We Just Found a 'Super-Earth' That Could Be an Ocean-Covered Water World

An exoplanet just 100 light-years from Earth appears to be the best candidate yet for a sloshy, water-covered ocean world.
