Presently a professor of neurosurgery at Stanford University with expertise in the treatment of brain tumors, stereotactic radiosurgery and spine surgery (complex and minimally invasive). Expert in pediatric neurosurgery and formerly Chief of pediatric neurosurgery at Children's Hospital in Orange County, CA. Repeatedly honored a one of "America's Top Surgeons" by the Consumers' Research Council and "Best Doctors in America" by Best Doctors.

Also an inventor and entrepreneur having restructured Accuray (ARAY-Nasdaq) in 1997 obtaining FDA approval of its core technology, the CyberKnife, and serving as CEO. ARAY went public in 2007 with a valuation of $1.3B. Co-founded DxTx in 2002, funded by Siemens Medical and subsequently acquired.

Has continued to act as both an investor and consultant to a number of medical device and biomedical companies. Served on the advisory board of the Fogarty Institute of Innovation. Remains a venture partner or operating partner at a number of venture capital firms. Presently on the board of Healthcube, founder of Happi.ai and advisory board of a number of start-ups including PUUR, MindStruck and AIC.

A philanthropist who has funded projects related to healthcare in the third world including blood banks, health clinics and HIV/AIDS programs. Also has endowed chairs at major universities including Stanford University School of Medicine and Tulane University School of Medicine. Continues to fund medical research at multiple institutions.

Is founder and director of the Center for Compassion and Altruism Research and Education at Stanford University (CCARE). The mission of CCARE is to understand more clearly the neural correlates of compassion and the value proposition of being compassionate in regard to health, wellness and longevity.
